Pressio Spine revealed the successful completion of the first clinical cases using its Continuum compression staple, a nitinol fixation system for single-level anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF).
Continuum is made from superelastic nitinol to provide continuous compression across the fusion site. Unlike traditional anterior fixation systems needing multiple screws and angled placement, it’s positioned in line with the spine using a streamlined technique, which the Charlotte, N.C.-based company said reduces placement steps and simplifying workflow.
The system comes as a sterile, single-use instrument kit that needs no reprocessing or loaner-tray coordination. Ready for surgery, it can accommodate short-notice cases while simplifying inventory management and reducing facility preparation, the company said.
Led by Dr. Daniel Leas at Carolina Neurosurgery and Spine Associates, the Continuum cases signaled the start of Pressio’s initial user program.
“My first cases with Continuum validated what the design promised. The nitinol compression is doing real work immediately,” said Dr. Leas. “I don’t have to think about screw angles or trajectories or multi-step fixation protocols. The technique is intuitive, the instrumentation is complete and ready, and the construct performance was evident from placement. For me and my team, this simplifies cervical fusions considerably.”
Pressio also offers Tidal, a 3D-printed titanium cervical fusion cage with 80% porosity to support graft integration and a threaded design for rotational stability during insertion.
Together, Continuum and Tidal combine anterior fixation and interbody fusion in a sterile, single-use system. Both arrive ready for surgery, reducing sourcing, processing, and inventory requirements.
The company continues to enroll surgeons and surgical centers evaluating the complete system.
“For decades, anterior plates in cervical fusion have been static. They hold position. That’s it. They don’t support healing. Continuum changes that entirely,” said CEO Kent Ellington. “The nitinol compression is actively working, continuously supporting the fusion site. That’s a fundamental shift in what an anterior fixation device can deliver clinically. And beyond the clinical benefit, the package is elegant for the facility. Sterile, ready to use, no processing required, no inventory complexity. A surgeon can add a case to the schedule on short notice without logistical friction. That combination of clinical performance and operational simplicity is what makes this a game changer for both the OR and the ASC.”
